The economy of the valleys has always been based on fishing, where eels have been of particular importance.
With the arrival of the Argulus Giordani (called “peocio”) from Asia in the 1970s, a parasite that affected scaleless fish, the production of eels and other fish was drastically decimated.
The last and perhaps most drastic coup de grace was given by the arrival of cormorants, a non-native species, which, unchallenged, due to its voracity has practically eliminated fish production.
Always in the tradition of the islands of the Venice Lagoon and the humid and brackish areas of the valleys and the Po Delta, the castraùre and the bòtoli find their unique and ideal environment to grow luxuriantly.
